OLYMPIC CHAMPION KAYLA HARRISON TO COMPETE IN US NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
American Judo Star to appear in final US event before Rio Games
Lynnfield, MA (April 4, 2016); Kayla Harrison, the first ever American Olympic Gold Medalist—male or female—in the sport of judo, announced today that she will be competing on April 9 at the USA Senior National Championships at the Irving Convention Center in Irving, Texas. Harrison, who recently launched her own fitness clothing line (Fuji by Kayla) is coming off a team victory at the New York Open. This will be her first appearance at the National Championships since 2014.
“I’m looking forward to the Nationals and performing in front of a home crowd,” said Harrison. “To be the US National champion going into Rio is important so this is a big event for me.”
When Harrison won gold at the London 2012 Olympic Games, she became the first American judoka of either gender to become Olympic champion. In 2010, Harrison became only the fourth American to win a world title; she is the 2015 Pan American Games champion and the #1 judoka in the world in her division. She has eight individual Senior National Championships spread over three weight divisions.
“It’s exciting for USA Judo to have Kayla compete at the National Championships. She is a role model and the most visible judoka in the world. Her participation is important for the future of USA Judo”, said Jose Rodriguez, CEO, USA Judo.
The national championships start on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 9am at the Irving Convention Center in Irving, Texas. For ticket and other tournament information contact the USA Judo National Office at 719.866.4730.
